A travesty is upon us... [Feb. 27th, 2009: :11:25 pm]
[Tags|, , ]

Ladies and gentlemen;

It is not very often I call upon you to help me in any fashion. But tonight I ask all of you, all ten of my readers, to sign a petition to save CBC Radio 3. It would mean more than the world to me, and it might just mean the difference between the strengthening of Canadian culture and a giant tear in our artistic fabric. Please, I urge you to sign the petition and pass it on to anyone you know that truly supports and enjoys the arts. All you have to do is ask a few friends and ask them to ask a few friends, and so on. Every name counts.

Here is the link again. It takes only a few seconds to put your name on the petition, and you could be saving Canadian culture and independent music as we know it!

If you sign, I thank you from the bottom of my Canadian-music obsessed heart. And if you didn't sign it, then shame on you, for you are the kind of person that has allowed the Canadian arts to be suppressed for so long!

You should probably know that after a month of voting, Phog Lounge in Windsor (probably my most favourite bar ever) won the Searchlight Best Live Music Venue in Canada contest. Phog beat out 113 other venues in the entire COUNTRY! I know one of the owners, Tom, through Craig. They went to high school together. Ever since one fateful evening that Craig took me to Phog and got me drunk on cherry whiskey and coke, I have been a fan of the beauty that if Phog Lounge!

There's some info here about the win.
As well as here.

The exact number of votes cast is still completely in the dark; nobody knows for sure except the big wigs at the CBC. But you can bet your ass that it must have been a lot considering some big venues (like the Horseshoe, and Zaphod Beeblebrox) got beat out.

All I can say is congrats to Tom and Frank. They deserve the win; not only for Phog, but for Windsor, which is in such disarray, that a metaphorical bursting-through-doors in the art community is exactly what the city needs.

If you haven't been to Phog, you need to go. You need to go to Windsor just to visit Phog Lounge. Also, I will be posting information on the giant shin dig the CBC is throwing for Phog as their prize.

Also, Tom sometimes broadcasts music and stuff live from Phog. Definitely check that out here!! It's really neat.

Yay!

It was the big day, you know! [Nov. 1st, 2007: :06:28 pm]

In case you've all been living under rocks lately, today was the day I kicked ass on the Radio 3 airwaves. What ass did I kick! However, I will admit to wishing I had said a bit more, but I was really nervous! Personally, I thought things went well and Craig and I got along well.

Pedro and I are another story.

Jijou and I are an R rated story. Wink!

I've been getting many-a-thumbs up for my performance and in case you missed it, here's your chance to listen to the scoped version of the show! It runs about 20 minutes. 20 minutes of awesome Craig and Diana.

Well, I hope everyone that listened had a good laugh and enjoyed some really great tunes by some amazing Canadian independent bands. If you'd like any information on anything Craig and I played during the hour, just comment below and I will let you know! Thanks again to everyone for all of the support, loving words, and hugs everyday outside of the station that really do make me feel like you love me. I love each and every one of you. None of you could possibly understand how much your support helps and humbles me. Thank you!!

Oh by the way.. [Oct. 31st, 2007: :05:52 pm]

In my Radio 3 "Castro" hat with my slide whistle chillin' between my lips and Said the Whale on my speakers, this is the story of my day at Radio 3...

After walking down the wrong street for about, oh let's say 20 minutes, I finally realized that "Oh yes! Front St. runs parallel to King St! Hm!" I promptly found my way to Front St.

As I'm walking down Front St. I approach the Fairmont Royal York. Now for those of you who don't know what the Fairmont Royal York is, it's a ritzy hotel with sheets that even Jesus would sleep on. As I get closer, I notice the police officers, security officials, and traffic barricade. I assume it's Brad Pitt or someone as yawn-inducing. Anyway, up rolls some police motorcycles and a motorcade of black shiny cars with dark windows. Oh, cool, maybe it's Stephen Harper. I give it a minute. The door opens and out pops... you'll never guess... THE DALAI LAMA. Can you... like... okay for one minute try to understand this: I'm already on my way to Radio 3 to co-host with Craig Norris and now...? NOW the Dalai Lama is within feet of me. He smiled at me. He looked and smiled at me. It was astounding. I almost cried.

I proceeded to continue down Front St. toward the CBC and hurrah I found it! Unfortunately for Craig I was about 15 minutes early. My bad, Mr. Norris. But I got to say "Hi!" on the R3-30 Podcast, of which I know secrets nobody will ever know! Truth be told, I know what an R3-30 twin-spin is neener neener neeeenerrrr! Shortly after this, the real fun began.

I was nervous. So very nervous. As I've never been on-air here at Radio Humber (yet), I wasn't knowing what, really, to expect in the realm of announcer breaks. Radio 3 does it completely different because this show was pre-taped. Ah, the illusion is lost, but worry not! It still came out sounding great. We touched on a number of topics like how whores charge, and sluts don't! This is where you would hear the "Out of Bounds" bell. We also talked about jerks who ruin seminars! I even got to do a break off the end of a song. I've never done that before. It was seriously an honour and I thank Craig, Pedro and of course my darling life-partner Jijou Fantoche.

Between laughing it up with Craig Norris, shaking Jian Gomeshi's hand, having Sook Yin Lee brush my shoulder, peering into Stuart McLean's office, and seeing Pedro Mendes in that sexy "Lucia Libre" mask, I think I can safely say I had a great day, and a great time at the CBC today. I hope that I can do it again in the future sometime! And whoever sent those letters to Craig complaining about me getting to co-host, get over my complete and utter awesomeness.

Did I mention the Dalai Lama smiled at me?!

The Idea of Gaining Weight [Oct. 30th, 2007: :12:03 pm]

I have nothing left to write anymore. Nothing. I'm having bad chest pains recently. More so than I usually have considering I've got a heart condition. A piece of cement fell off my orthodontic work. It would probably be a good idea to get it fixed. Last night I was told I'm fat. I also got my tarot cards read last night. If you knew what they said, you would gasp and cry. I did. I'm going to the CBC tomorrow to record and co-host Craig Norris' Thursday show. It will be on Sirius channel 94 at 9am-12pm Thursday morning or on Radio 3 from 12pm-3pm Thursday afternoon. You should listen. That's it. You wouldn't care to know what else is going on in my head.

Naked Strangers [Oct. 19th, 2007: :10:13 pm]

Well today was the big day. I had worked on my seminar for literally five days straight. Monday I did an interview and edited it. Tuesday I edited more interviews. Wednesday I spent the entire day writing my essay. Thursday I worked on my PowerPoint presentation. Today, Friday, was presentation day. The day started quickly and sweatily. But that's okay. I wore my sweet new CBC t-shirt (pictured above) and I was excited to get this over with! Andy proof read my essay so I knew it was good, my PowerPoint looked and sounded amazing, I had cue cards, I had a head full of knowledge and a heart full of passion. The only thing I didn't anticipate was a grilling by someone in the class who has a personal issue with me. I thought it was rude, inconsiderate, and insulting what this person did, and after my presentation, though I held it together during, I left the classroom and proceeded to cry. I worked so hard on this project and I'm passionate about Radio 3. Not for one minute did I anticipate this person doing what he did. After class, I spoke to the professor who was unaware there was any history between me and this douchebag rude fellow. He assured me my mark will not be affected by this event. He also agreed with me that this fellow was being rather rude and reminded me of his presentation date with a wink and maniacal chuckle.

As I'm now finished my seminar, perhaps the biggest piece of work of the semester, I was able to go out and take some photographs of the Humber arboretum. It's Autumn, perhaps the most beautiful season of the four, and I was rather upset I hadn't been able to get out and take photos earlier. I'll leave you with a decent shot. The rest are posted on my Facebook. Other than this, sleep. PLEASE.

Edit
I forgot a few things:

1. I fucking love The New Pornographers. It's fundamentally wrong.
2. Mantler on vinyl makes me wish I had a turntable right now. Thank you, darling.
3. Hershey milkshakes are disgusting.
4. I like to dance.

Backseat Sweetheart [Oct. 15th, 2007: :10:29 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , ]

I've only been back from school for about ten minutes. The worst part is I had been there since 8:30am. As in this morning. As in fourteen (14) hours ago. Can you even begin to understand how exhausted I am? The best part? I'm still not done the assignment. It needs music. Or less processing of vocals to -24dB dynamically. Oh, my tummy is a rumblin'! I've not eaten since Andy and I had some (mediocre) sub-age for lunch. We won't talk about that though: Andy disappointed himself. Poor lad!

Anyway, I interviewed Steve Pratt today from CBC Radio 3 for my radio seminar. The interview went great and I felt comfortable which allowed me to ask the questions with confidence. I'm so glad I got the chance to interview him because he's the president of CBC Radio 3 and his opinion would make a huge impact on my seminar. Steve: I'm sure you've found this entry through your creepy Google alerts (legal stalking mechanism) so thank you for the interview! If I get a 90% on it, I'll give you a dollar. An e-dollar, though.

Finally, though I did not get to post the album of the week yet, I can finally announce my big news. Ready?

On Wednesday, October 31st, yours truly will be adventuring to the CBC building in scenic downtown Toronto. Would you like to know why? I bet you would like to know why! Well, my friends, at the end of my interview with Craig Norris aka Muffin, he asked me to co-host a show with him for his CBC Radio 3 web cast! Do you know what this means? I'm going to be on the CBC! I'm going to be on satellite radio! I'm going to be on the Internerd! So, here's the info you need to know, the info I know so far:

Wednesday October 31st it will be recorded.
On Thursday November 1st it will be aired.
Time TBA.. get back to me, Muffin.
Sirus channel 94.
Or online on this here technological thinger.

When I find out more info, you'll find out more info. Also, Pedro said my name wrong on this week's R3-30 Podcast. I'm slightly disappointed but I've never met a single person who knew how to say my name properly without being told.

Anyway, back to the grind. I need to add a music bed under my Humber Profile which, if I may say so, is amazing. I'm kind of a big deal.

Now that I've had time to calm down...

Toronto is (unseasonably?) cold right now. Besides the weather outside, the weather inside the stupids.. wait... I was going to backspace that until I realized that I typed "stupids" and not "studios". Freudian slip? Even if it's not, that's pretty funny. Anyway, as I was saying: the weather inside the studios is also obscenely cold. I can't even sit in there comfortably and edit for four (4) hours of my life. Side note: Kattryna I have your awesomely orange pen.

Last night, Nicole and I went to the Woodbine Centre also known as crappy craphole full of craps. Instead of "spending nothing but time together", we both ended up dropping mad chedda on random things. Most notable purchases of the night:

•New unmentionables as La Senza had a "Buy one bra get one FREE!" dealio.
•Advil for those stress-induced and coma-causing headaches you get being a second year.
•Condoms.
•A patch cord.

Assuming all of the above items were purchased at the same store, and assuming the cashier would have had half a brain, I would be curious to know what, exactly, were running through his/her mind as he/she scanned the items.

My desktop is pimped out like a 1980 Mazda 626. Yeah.

Two Sets of Footprints, Footprints in the Sand! [Oct. 11th, 2007: :12:40 pm]

School has been keeping me too busy for my liking. It's Autumn and I've had a minimal amount of opportunities to go outside and take photographs during the most beautiful season of the year. Instead I stay couped up in recording studios conducting interviews and editing entertainment reports and throwing things because I hate editing entertainment reports. Don't get me wrong, I'm probably the most passionate person you will find in this program, and I love radio like I love to play Wii bowling for seven hours a day, but there's only so much a person can take. I might as well start sleeping in the old abandoned studio that houses about ten million shrink wrapped compact discs.

This afternoon I'm conducting a telephone interview with Steve Pratt, the big kahuna over at CBC Radio 3 in Vancouver. In case you're not keeping track, that is three interviews with CBC Radio 3 staff. Mr. Pratt is quite the busy man so I'll be keeping the interview pretty short, but to the point and useful nonetheless. In a bit of sad news, I've not heard from Craig Norris yet. Though I'm not freaking out over it (yet), I'm a bit disheartened by the situation as any good news right now would be great news. I've also still not received my CBC t-shirt! If it isn't in by tomorrow, I fear I may cry. Just a little bit. Okay, a lot.

I am thoroughly anticipating this weekend. The boys of S2 as well as I and hopefully L-Fabs will be getting saucy and playing Wii all Saturday night. It'll be nice to have a night with no homework and getting to see Laura outside of Port Colborne where the only good semi-alright thing to go is go grab wings at the 'Jammer or drink profusely. Or both. Simultaneously. Oh, Port Colborne: your novelty shall never wear off.

So, here is this week's entry for Album of the Week. It's a great one. Enjoy. Also, for those of you who disagree with what I'm doing: I don't care what you think. If it comes down to the idea of me not doing AOTW anymore, then I'll simply cut the tracks short, fade them in and then out, and make a sampler file. But if it comes down to that, I'd probably stop all together. I'm just getting the word out about bands that clearly deserve more recognition than they're receiving.

This has been one boring weekend. I didn't go home for Thanksgiving, nor did I go to Brantford. I guess that's okay: I usually get maligned about my lifestyle choice (newfound re-entry into vegetarianism). Anyway, I've been meatless, roommate-less, and entertainment-less all weekend. I've been spending my time watching episodes from the first season of Pinky and the Brain. Speaking of which, have you ever watched Pinky and the Brain as a child and then watched it as an adult and noticed the difference? When I was young, I just laughed at that constant exclamation of "NARF!" or "ZORT!" but now when I watch it, I actually gasp at some things. In the second ever episode they talk about Jihad! And later on they make crude references to past presidents and societal events! Not only am I appalled that as a very bright child I didn't catch on sooner, but at the idea of my parents allowing me to watch something like this! Parents: you did a terrible job or censoring what I watched and heard as a child! I blame you for everything! Everything!

Anyway, new R3-30 tomorrow! Yay!
